🎃 Terms of Use
Guess-o'-Lantern · Last updated 15 October 2026
Guess-o'-Lantern ("the Game") is made and run by Samuel Gerard ("we", "us"). By playing the Game you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use it.
1. Playing the Game
You may play the Game through this website for your own personal, non-commercial enjoyment. That's the only permission these terms give you; everything else is reserved.
2. Who owns what
The Game, including its code, graphics, text, prompt lists, design and the name "Guess-o'-Lantern", belongs to Samuel Gerard and is protected by copyright and other laws. Some parts are open-source software used under their own licences.
3. What you must not do
- copy, reproduce, republish or distribute the Game or any part of it;
- reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the Game, or try to extract its source code, except to the extent the law allows despite this restriction;
- make a copy, clone or derivative of the Game, or use its code or content in another product;
- scrape it, run bots against it, or interfere with its servers or other players' games;
- use the Game, or anything taken from it, for commercial purposes without our written permission.
4. Playing nicely
Nicknames and guesses are seen by the other players in your game. Don't use them to harass, threaten or abuse anyone, or to share anything unlawful. We may remove players or games that do.
5. Your carvings and privacy
We don't ask for accounts or personal details. Your nickname, guesses and carvings are kept in the server's memory only while your game is running and are discarded afterwards; we don't store them. Your browser keeps your nickname and a game session token on your device so you can rejoin after a dropped connection. Images you save are created on your own device.
Games are private (invite only) unless the host makes them public. A public game is listed on the home screen while it waits for players, showing the host's nickname, the number of players and the game settings, so anyone can join it, including people you don't know.
6. No guarantees
The Game is provided free and "as is". We try to keep it running, but we don't promise it will always be available, error-free or that a game in progress won't be interrupted. To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for any loss arising from your use of the Game. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986 where those Acts apply.
7. Changes
We may update these terms from time to time. The date at the top shows when they last changed; continuing to play means you accept the current version.
8. Law
These terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand, and the New Zealand courts have jurisdiction.
